Address: Piazza Mino da Fiesole
Fiesole, set between the two hills of San Francesco and
Sant'Apollinare, is at present one of the most famous place in
the environs of Florence. Outstanding among the city's monuments
is the cathedral dedicated to S. Romolo. Begun in the 11th
century, it was later completed and enlarged, then remodeled and
restored and integrated at the end of the 19th century,
especially in the facade and the tower. The
interior
is on a basilica plan, with a nave divided from the side aisles
by round piers - some with reused Roman capitals - and with a
large semi-circular apse. A large
crypt lies
under the choir which is therefore raised above the floor level
of the aisles, as is the case in the basilica of
San Miniato al Monte near
Florence.
