A beach in the city
Sunbathe, relax and play beach volley on the banks of the Arno
If you are about to make a trip to Florence remember to pack a swimming costume, because the city now has a beach! Though the sea is not far away, the city council decided to use part of the river bank of the Arno for a pleasant relaxation spot in the summer, free of charge and just a stone’s throw from the city centre.
Visitors can make use of deck chairs, sun beds and umbrellas (no hire charge, you just have to produce a form of ID), play beach volley, take their children to the special play area, sunbathe and cool off with a cold shower or under the wooden gazebo (complete with vaporizers). There is more of a breeze by the river than elsewhere in the city, and it is very pleasant to relax and admire Florence from this rather unusual point of view. Open daily from 10am to 10pm, the beach on the Arno will be available for use by Florentines and tourists alike until 2 September, under the discreet but watchful supervision of the Civil Protection Agency, lifeguards and the Red Cross.
