A competitive race and a non-competitive walk
Sunday, September 26th 2004
9:30 am, Piazza Santa Croce, Florence
After the enormous success of the first edition last October, which beyond our most optimistic expectations drew 5,000 participants and raised 250,000 euro, this year we see the return of CORRI LA VITA, the mini-marathon/walk born as an opportunity to mix sport with social conscience. CORRI LA VITA is designed to be fun for every member of the family. We encourage children, teenagers, parents and grandparents together with professional athletes to participate and help raise funds and awareness in the fight against breast cancer, a reality we share every day. Our idea is to have as many people as possible (residents, tourists, families and the entire city) participate in this event, so important to the pride Florence and all Florentines.
The two routes - a competitive mini-marathon (12 kilometres) together with a non-competitive walk (6 kilometres) will pass through the historical centre and into the hillsides of the Oltrarno district. Many private gardens and villas will be open for a rare visit. There will be points of refreshment along the way.
CORRI LA VITA is an event created to raise funds to be designated to the creation of a new Centro di Riabilitazione Oncologica, a centre which will help women who have undergone surgery for breast cancer in both physical and psychological rehabilitation. This center is the result of collaboration between the CSPO (Centro Studio Prevenzione Oncologica and LILT (Lega Italiana per la Lotta contro i Tumori). Part of the money collected with this year¹s edition will also be designated to FILE (Fondazione Italiana di Leniterapia) which together with the University of Florence, is promoting a Masters degree (second level) in pain relief therapy and end-of-life care in intensive therapy. LILT is a volunteer association, at work in every Italian province, aiming to distribute information regarding cancer prevention, and to assist in confronting the ailment through self-help groups, and assistance and rehabilitation centres.
