Room 3 - Sienese Painting of the 14th Century
Dedicated to 14th century Sienese painting. Beginning on the left, Stories of the Life of the Beata Umiltà, originally in the church of the Donne di Faenza; followed by the Nativity by the Bolognese painter Simone de' Crocifissi, and a Presentation in the Temple by the Sienese Bonaccorsi. Then the famous Annunciation by Simone Martini (1333), originally in the Cathedral of Siena, one of the most important creations by this leader of the Sienese school, rendered with musical rhythim and miniaturistic quality. On the sides observed the figures of SS. Ansanus and Giuditta by Lippo Manni, pupil and brother-in-law of Simone, who attempts to emulate the fluidity of line and delicate from of the master. The room also contains the Madonna and Child by the Sienese Niccolò di Ser Sozzo Tegliacci (the date can be read 1315 or 1341), and, the Four Stories of the Life of St. Nicola di Bari and the delicate Presentation in the Temple (the latter dated 1342) by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, brother of Piero, and with him considered one of the most important Sienese artists of the 14th century.
