"Table-Tops / Wall Panels in Semi-precious
Stone Pietra Dura
"
In 1588 the Grand Duke Ferdinando de' Medici founded a school whose purpose was to produce fine inlay and mosaic work in semi-precious stones. Towards the end of the nineteenth century the school closed but this pecuriarly florentine tradition remains and can be seen in tables and other work available from the Romanelli Gallery. Subjects vary from flowers landscapes, to figures, each painstakingly executed using time-worn techniques by artisans from whose ability in understanding the subtle nuance of colour in the stones, is born the splendour of "Picture in Stone".
