An international contemporary art exhibition on gender issues focused on the implications of the social and political role of women in contemporary culture

Woman Women is a travelling contemporary art exhibition by Adelina von Fürstenberg, promoted by the City of Florence, Province of Tuscany, Region of Tuscany and Firenze Mostre S.p.A. and organized by ART for The World, to mark the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of the Beijing Conference. After its initial exhibition in Florence, Woman Women will tour to Brussels (Palais des Beaux Arts et Tours & Taxis) and San Paolo (Sesc Pompeia).

The 33 exhibited artists represent a diversity of men and women from Italy and around the world. Their works reflect on the concept of femininity through a range of approaches, creating dialogues about the role played by women in the contemporary world. The works exhibited, including painting, sculpture, photography and video-installation, come from private and prestigious public European collections. Other works also come from the collection of the artists themselves. The exhibition includes works by both important artists born after the second part of the 20th century (Marina Abramovic, Jannis Kounellis, Sylvie Fleury, Nan Goldin, Kimsooja, Shirin Neshat, Chen Zhen, etc) and young, international artists (Daniela de Lorenzo, Marcello Maloberti, Yinka Shonibare etc) who have been assigned the task of representing different aspects of female identity, while pointing to issues and opportunities faced by modern-day women.

The term “woman” is not used in a strict biological or sexual sense. The exhibition delves into the sociological, cultural and political dimensions of the idea of “woman” and explores the philosophical and symbolic values attributed to women across cultures. Each day during the three months of the exhibition, the Festival dei Popoli in Palazzo Strozzi will present films and documentaries by international movie directors, dedicated to the idea of femininity. Founded in 1959, the Festival dei Popoli is now the only Italian Institution that deals with social cinema.
