An accomplished selection of works on show in the Accademia Gallery illustrates the variety of artistic production in Florence in the second half of the XIII century, the years in which Dante Alighieri, born in 1265, was becoming the protagonist of life in the city and Giotto, born in 1267, was training in the shadow of Cimabue and Arnolfo di Cambio.

The variety of works on show - works of painting, sculpture, goldsmithing, illuminated codices, fabrics, seals, coins, coats of arms and more - offer a wide panorama of the activities and high quality level attained by the artists and artisan workshops of Florence in the late thirteenth century.

Presenting masterpieces from numerous Italian and foreign museums, as well as from churches of the region, the exhibition draws attention to a little-known, but tremendously important period of Florentine art. It was indeed the premise on which Giotto worked his renewal of Italian art. Two youthful paintings by this master are exhibited: the Madonna dell'Oratorio di Sant'Omobono from Borgo San Lorenzo and the Maestà from the church of San Giorgio alla Costa in Florence.
